Self Storage Dos and Don’ts

Storage units, whether they are used for a month or a year, are a great resource for people looking to better manage their lives. From a temporarily holding zone between homes, to a secondary storage spot for seasonal items, storage units can have many functions. However, choosing the right sized unit for you is just the beginning. There are some other things that you should know, if you want to take advantage of the storage options that are available!

Here are some basic dos and don’ts to keep in mind, as you enter the world of self storage:

DO choose the right storage company. There are many self storage facilities out there, but they won’t all meet your needs. Take your time to research and visit a few facilities, before signing on with one. Look for a company that is upfront and honest, reasonably priced, and offers amenities like 24/7 security and climate control.

DON’T wait until the last second to get your unit. If you know you will be moving soon, are downsizing, going to college, etc…don’t delay your storage unit search until the final hours. Have a spot secured already, have your keys, and have already visited the unit, before the day you need to move belongings into your space.

DO plan out and pack what you wish to store. Make a list of the items you want to prioritize for storage, and make sure they are cleaned, boxed up, and labeled properly. If you throw things into your storage unit haphazardly, it will only be a cluttered mess that you likely won’t want to utilize!

DON’T store precious, irreplaceable items. Although a good storage unit will be safe and secure, it’s best not to put your finest belongings in there. Use your smarts with this one. Store cash in a bank, gold or other valuables in a safe, and priceless art or furniture in a specialized facility.

DO look into insurance options. Depending on the value of the items you will be storing, it may be worth asking your insurance company if they cover items in storage units. Sometimes, renters or homeowners insurance may cover this type of personal property. And this can give you tremendous peace of mind.
