If you’ve ever watched the TV show Storage Wars, you’ve probably seen that more than a few people have safes inside of their storage lockers. Is this necessary? Let’s take a closer look at using a safe inside of a locker, and whether or not you really need one.
Why Use a Safe?
Companies like Waterglen Self Storage have around-the-clock security and monitoring, so why would you need to add a safe to your locker in addition to that constant security? A safe simply provides an additional layer of safety and security. If you have sensitive papers, valuables that are worth a lot of money, or other items that are rare or hard to replace, a safe might be a good idea. This way, you can be certain that the really expensive or important things you have will be, well, safe.
Some Things to Put in a Safe
You can really put anything you want inside of a safe, but some things that may warrant extra security include:
- Money: while we don’t recommend storing money inside of a locker, some people do this. Whether its foreign currency, collectible coins, or other types of money, a safe is a good place to put your old stash of coins.
- Passports and other personal information: anything that is really personal like a passport, a birth certificate, adoption papers, and things of this nature should go inside of a safe — even if you don’t have a self storage unit, you should always store these thing somewhere…safe.
- Business–related items: even if you aren’t storing secure documents in your safe, you should always place anything related to your business inside of a strongbox. Things like the deed to the building your business is in, any business papers, and anything that could be considered highly sensitive information.
- Trinkets of really high value: you know those diamond Tiffany jewels your grandmother left you? You may want to put those in a vault of some kind. Jewelry should always be kept in a safe, and it’s important to make sure your safe is water and fire-proof too, so that you can be extra sure that your jewels are secure.
Insuring Your Goods
Even if you put your items inside of the world’s most secure safe, you should still insure any valuables that you do put inside of a self storage unit. Most people think that home owner’s insurance will cover everything, but this might not be the case. Check your insurance policy, and call your insurance provider to find out what is and isn’t included in your coverage. In most cases, you will need to obtain additional insurance in order to make sure that everything inside of your self storage locker is truly safe. It can be devastating to lose items that are important to you, so make sure that everything you love is safe, secure, and covered!
