If you’ve lived in the same place for a long time, you may find yourself needing some more space lately for one reason or another. Maybe you have a new family member, or maybe you just have a lot more stuff–either way, space is easier to come by than you think. Here are our best tips for creating more space in the place where you currently live.
Use closet space. While closets might have been built originally for storing things, you can easily gut a closet area and turn it into something else. Some great ideas are a small office space, a baby space (cribs can fit in larger closets, and you can make one a nursery easily), or even a place for a single bed. All you have to do is take off the door, fix the inside, and you’ve got an instant second room!
Buy furniture that converts into a storage space. Lots of footstools and tables have hidden drawers and pockets for extra items, and those are the types of furniture that will make dealing with a smaller space easier. Think about buying some of these things to help you make more space.
Throw some stuff out. Do you really need that exercise machine you haven’t used since 1980? Maybe not, right? You can hold a yard sale, donate items to charity, or sell things online. You’ll be surprised at how many things you can simply get rid of.
Consider doing what the closet pros do, and add some extra rods, some shelves, drawers, and other options to your closet to maximize space. Stores like Ikea and Home Depot have some great and affordable options for closet storage that you should look into.
Think up high. Instead of putting all of your furniture on the floor, buy some larger shelves or even a few built-ins, and use those to store things. If you love the idea of a custom built in that sits off of the floor, this might be a worthwhile investment if you really need that extra space.
Don’t forget the space above door frames and around rooms. Putting shelves up around a room can create a lot of extra storage for books and other things. Or, you can add a shelf to the top of a door frame to store things like bathroom items. (Bathroom doors tend to have larger spaces above the door frame, and this is the perfect size for a bigger shelf.)
Put some stuff in a storage locker. Everyone has those larger items in their home that they don’t really need to have right away, but maybe want to keep for a later time (you never know when you might need those things, right?). Storage units come in all shapes and sizes, and you can easily store anything you need in a self storage unit.
Try not to cram too many new things into your home for a while. Until you can clean some stuff out or find more space, keep buying larger items to a minimum. Think twice before you buy something new, and consider whether or not you really need that thing, or if you’re just buying to have a new thing. There’s a difference, and not buying things for a while will cut back on both the amount of space that you need and the money that you spend–a win-win!
