With thousands of people in Northern Colorado using self storage units every month, it’s becoming more common, and accepted, to have your own storage rental. Everyone from college students to growing families can take advantage of this smart idea, to get more space and comfort in their homes, as well as peace of mind, knowing their belongings are safe and sound.
However, just because storage units are popular, it doesn’t mean that everyone is making the most of them. Self storage is a fantastic resource, but if you want to get the biggest bang for your rental buck, keep the following tips in mind:
- Get the right size
Too many people get a storage unit that is either too big or too small for them, and this isn’t an efficient use of space or money! Ask for help in selecting a unit size that isn’t so big that you’ll have tons of empty space, or a unit that is so small, it will be dangerously tight.
- Pay longer terms up front
When you can pay for your unit rental 6 months or a year ahead of time, you can save yourself some money. This is an especially good idea for people who are downsizing, expanding their families, or experiencing other longer-term changes.
- Label and organize
Resist the urge to haphazardly pile your storage unit with your stuff, and end up with a disorganized mess that will put you off from ever visiting or utilizing it! When you are selecting what you put in your unit, take care to clearly label and organize your boxes and bins. Then, when you move them into your unit, organize them in a way that allows easy access, leaving space to walk and maneuver.
- Choose a good location
Unless you plan to lock up your belongings for an extended period of time, it’s always a good idea to choose a storage facility that is relatively easy to get to. Don’t always go based on cheap prices, but select a facility that is near your home or work, is clean and secure, and where you feel comfortable. You’ll be much more apt to use it and get your money’s worth!
