Most of us don’t really like to clean, but we know it’s an integral part of life. We make messes, and eventually those messes need to be taken care of! Some people hire outside help for cleaning, some people put it off as long as possible, and others find small ways to keep things manageable every day. Regardless of your cleaning style, you probably wish you spent less time cleaning up, and more time living! If you want to maximize your cleaning efficiency, here are some tips to keep in mind:
- Store clutter off-site
One of the things that can make the biggest difference in your home is something that not many people talk about: the value of an off-site storage unit. Take the time to rent a unit, pack up things that you don’t need or use right now, and notice how much more spacious and easy your home becomes. Less clutter means less stuff to take care of, less stuff to trip over, and less stuff to feel guilty about.
- Set a timer
Too often, we wander around while cleaning and get distracted by other things, making our cleaning sessions long and exhausting. When you set a timer, you can stay focused and make more progress in a shorter time. Try setting a timer for only 20-30 minutes at a time, and take a break afterwards. Or challenge yourself to clean up as much as you can in only 5 minutes.
- Enlist help
Most of us live with other people, but we may be too busy, or too afraid to ask them to pitch in. If someone shares your space, they should help you clean it up, and this includes kids! Turn on some music and make it a game- get all hands on deck to tidy up your kitchen, living room, or other shared area. The time will fly by, and it’ll feel like a community effort.
- Try single-tasking
We’ve all been under the impression that multitasking is the most productive way, but in fact, it’s quite the opposite! Try focusing on only one cleaning task at a time, and don’t walk away until it’s finished. For example, when you’re scrubbing the sink, don’t put your sponge down to take the dog for a walk, or put in another load of laundry- tackle those things when the sink is done!
